1. PURPOSE

The Department of Accounting maintains an Accounting Journal List (“journal list” hereafter) to aid in assessing the quality of publications for merit and tenure-based decisions. This policy describes the process to add to or delete from the journal list or change the ranking of a journal.

2. PROPOSING ADDITION, DELETIONS, AND CHANGESTO JOURNAL RANKINGS

Changes to the journal list can be made during the journal list review process or ad hoc. The journal list review will be conducted by the participating faculty of the Department of Accounting at least once every two years. This review process will entail an open comment period during which all faculty can propose changes. Outside of this review process, any faculty member in the Department of Accounting may propose, at any time, the addition, deletion, or modification of the ranking of a journal on the journal list.

Proposals for adding, deleting, or changing the ranking of a journal should include the following information:

  • Current ranking and/or proposed ranking.
  • An explanation as to why the ranking should be changed or the journal added to or deleted from journal list.
  • A summary of the journal’s target audience and objectives.
  • The journal’s publisher and editor.
  • The following measures from Cabell’s Scholarly Analytics: Journal Citation Reports Journal Impact Factor, Cabell’s Classification Index, “difficulty of acceptance”, and acceptance rate.
  • Whether the journal is listed in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI).
  • The journal’s ranking on the Australian Dean’s Business Council’s (ADBC) most recent ranking of journal quality. If the journal is not listed on the ADBC, indicate this.
  • A description of the journal’s review process (e.g., double bind peer review).
  • Length of average journal article.
  • Any other information the proposer views as useful in helping faculty to evaluate the journal’s quality and fit with the Accounting Department’s mission.

Proposals for journal additions, deletions, and changes in ranking will be sent to the Department of Accounting’s representative on the McCoy Research Committee, who will share those proposals with the tenured and tenure-track faculty. 3.0 VOTING ON

3. ADDITIONS TO AND DELETIONS FROM THE JOURNAL LIST

The tenured and tenure-track faculty of the Department of Accounting will have two-weeks to review any proposed additions to or deletions from the active journal list and vote “yes, “no”, or “abstain”.

Votes may be placed in a ballot box in the departmental office or may be submitted electronically to the department’s McCoy Research Committee representative. Votes will be counted by the faculty conducting the vote and by a tenured faculty member.

If the majority of the votes are in favor of adding (deleting) the journal, then the journal will be added to (deleted from) the active journal list. In the event of a tie vote, the decision to add or delete the journal will be determined by a vote of the tenured faculty.

If a proposal to add a journal to the journal list is approved, then a second vote, described in the next section, is conducted to determine the ranking of the journal.

4. VOTING ON JOURNAL RANKINGS

The tenured faculty of the Department of Accounting will review any proposed journal ranking for new journals or changes to existing journal rankings and vote to approve or reject each proposal. Faculty members will have two weeks to review the proposal(s) and submit their vote(s).

Votes may be placed in a ballot box in the departmental office or may be submitted electronically to the department’s McCoy Research Committee representative. If the Department’s representative to the McCoy Research Committee is untenured, the Chair of the Department of Accounting may choose a tenured faculty member to conduct the vote. Votes will be counted by the faculty conducting the vote and by a tenured faculty member.

The following choices will be included on the ballot:

  • Rate journal as an “A+”.
  • Rate journal as an “A”.
  • Rate journal as a “B”.
  • Rate journal as a “C”.
