A Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Accounting at Texas State University! The Department of Accounting is dedicated to preparing a diverse student population for a rewarding business career that begins in accounting. As Department Chair, I am happy to share information about our programs, the department, the McCoy College of Business, and Texas State University.

The Department of Accounting offers a Bachelor of Business in Administration (BBA) in Accounting and a Master of Science in Accountancy (MAcy). The BBA provides students with a foundation in “the language of business” that positions them for professional success in accounting and other fields of business. The MAcy gives students the academic credentials necessary to qualify them to take the Certified Professional Accountant Examination (CPA) in Texas and further prepares them to pass the exam.

Outside of the classroom, we work with students to help them bridge the gap from student to professional. We have three accounting organizations to help students develop leadership skills, improve communication skills, and learn about the many careers available to students with accounting degrees.

  • Accounting Club
  • Beta Alpha Psi
  • National Association of Black Accountants

Our department, in collaboration with these active student organizations, holds mock interviews, resume-writing sessions, career panels, and recruiting events. We provide many opportunities for students to network with professionals from local, regional, and multinational firms so that they can learn about the exciting careers available to accountants. Our graduates go on to successful careers in a wide range of fields, including audit, tax, consulting, and corporate finance.

Programs

The Department of Accounting is separately accredited by the AACSB and oversees two degree programs:

  • BBA with a major in accounting
  • Master of Accountancy

Career Success

The Department of Accounting has an excellent record of preparing students for lifelong career success in a variety of professional jobs. Each semester recruiters from 15-20 organizations visit our campus for interviews and other career development presentations.  Our alumni have achieved professional distinction in public accounting, industry, government, and non-profit organizations.

The majority of our MAcy students complete a paid internship as part of their curriculum, and almost 100 percent of MAcy students secure a full-time position in professional accounting prior to graduation.   Students that graduate with a BBA in accounting go on to start their careers in industry, government, and local CPA firms.
