MORE INFO
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.
Student Volunteers
Currently enrolled Accounting majors are invited to volunteer at the clinic to gain valuable experience preparing basic tax returns for our clients. Student volunteers are under the supervision of current faculty who are licensed CPAs in the state of Texas. We are not accepting volunteer submissions from non-accounting majors.
Students can volunteer as greeters (simply providing customer service to clients as they arrive) and preparers (those actually preparing the returns).
To volunteer, submit the form below. Within 2 business days, volunteers will be added to a Canvas site which contains instructions for completing required trainings as well as instructions for signing up for the clinic shifts.
Any questions can be directed to VITA@txstate.edu.
