Alumni Activities
Accountants can do anything
— well, almost anything…
Although we cannot perform brain surgery or engineer a spaceship, accountants do work with professionals who do and we provide information and advice essential to their success. We prepare and audit financial statements and tax returns and provide advice that helps organizations and individuals reach their goals. With technical savvy and analytical skills, we can read a set of financials and identify when there is a mismatch between reported income and cash flow. We can spot an undervalued company or other business opportunity that others may have overlooked.
An accountant’s expertise, perspectives, and integrity are valued in entry-level positions, as mid-level managers, or in the C-suite as CFOs and CEOs. This is true for accountants in all sectors of the economy. That is why we say Accountants can do anything. Consider a few examples of our alumni and where their accounting degrees have taken them.
Big 4 Partner
With 20+ years of professional experience in public accounting, Anna Tallent, CPA (BBA ’01) is an assurance partner at Ernst & Young (EY). Throughout her career she has served clients in energy, advanced manufacturing and mobility, technology, and real estate. She has extensive audit and reporting experience in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, IPOs, common control transactions, equity and debt offerings, and private placement offerings. She spent two years working in London, United Kingdom, serving clients required to comply with the rules and regulations of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Anna says her work is very interesting as she gets to collaborate with exceptional individuals who strive to disrupt the market with innovative ideas. She also notes there have been many technological advances in the past few years within public accounting. Thus, she is continually learning at the firm and that motivates her every day. Another motivator is being the co-director for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Gulf South program. Working with entrepreneurs and following their journeys as they build exceptional businesses that contribute to growth in their communities is very fulfilling. Being in the Austin office has given Anna the opportunity to frequently be on-campus at Texas State. She has demonstrated her dedication to her alma mater by serving on the Accounting Department’s Advisory Board and is now on the McCoy College of Business Advisory Board. Anna’s belief in service is further evidenced by chairing Junior Achievement of Central Texas and serving on the board of the Jon Bromley Texas Venture Labs and the Swedish Women’s Educational Association.
Entrepreneur
Who would have thought that earning a BBA in accounting and a MAcy degree along with a CPA license would have led to becoming the largest black-owned barber supply and family-run business in the DFW metroplex? Yet, that is exactly the experience of the CEO and founder of The Barber Plug, Devante Sanders (BBA '16 & MAcy '18). After working for nearly two years at a Big 4 firm and while later working at a leading global investment banking firm, Devante founded his business. By January 2022 the firm had more than $288,000 in sales and the business valuation was more than $3 million. Devante says he has learned, “Don’t look at the scoreboard; just keep scoring.”
Accountant (government sector)
In her position with one of the largest government agencies in Texas, Namrata Adhikary (BBA ‘20) gets a lot of satisfaction from knowing that her work results in helping people access essential services. She previously had more than 15 years' experience at multiple employers in the medical and healthcare industry. Adhikary describes her major in accounting at Texas State as providing a solid foundation for being successful in her work. “Accounting is needed in almost every department of any government agency and most businesses, so students should be encouraged to major in accounting.” Namrata is planning to sit for the CPA exam in early 2024.
Audit Associate
The diverse clients and opportunities in central Texas were important when Liesel Bass (BBA '23 & MAcy '21) accepted a position with a public accounting firm that provides audit, tax and consulting services with a focus on the middle market. Her audit assignments have included not-for-profits and governmental entities and she is beginning an audit for an international education client and an SEC client. Liesel passed all parts of the CPA exam immediately after graduation and will soon meet the experience requirement to receive her CPA license. She wants to encourage students with this advice, "Don't be afraid to make mistakes because that will stunt your personal and professional growth."
CEO
Sometimes, fate plus a lot of hard work produces unexpected positive rewards. Edna Galinda Brambila (BBA '21 & MAcy '22) is proof of that. While working on her MAcy degree, she saw an opportunity to start her own small business and has been devoted to that full-time until she begins employment with a Big 4 firm this coming fall. "During my studies, I learned how to analyze financial data and how to create budgets. Obtaining an accounting degree has been instrumental in my success as a CEO and provided me with knowledge that is essential to handle business operations and to make strategic plans. The skills I've developed in my business will be valuable to my employer and our clients when I embark on my public accounting career this fall."
Junior Staff Accountant
Elaine Cole (BA '19 in English Language & Literature and BBA '23 in accounting) has an admirable work ethic and drive to reach her career goals as proven by earning two bachelor's degrees from Texas State. To have more career opportunities, Elaine enrolled for a second degree to major in accounting. While working her way through school at various jobs, Elaine was responsible for cash handling and other financial duties. She became confident about her accounting skills. Rightfully so. The week after graduation, Elaine began her accounting career as a junior staff accountant for a wholesale furniture company in Austin. She plans to sit for the CPA exam later in 2023. After just a few weeks in her new job, she says confidently that her Texas State accounting degree gave her a solid foundation. Elaine's philosophy is: "Every day is a gift and we should make the most of it, doing our best and helping each other along the way."
Real Estate Investor
When he began his academic career at a local community college, Mark Mata (BBA '21) also began working at a central Texas credit union. First, he was in member services and then moved to a position as a loan processor and on to being a commercial loan processor. From that work experience and the coursework required for his accounting degree, he developed strong financial analysis skills. These served him well when he went out on his own two years ago to begin working full-time for himself as an investor in residential real estate.
Tax Associate
Her public accounting career began at a Big 4 firm at the height of COVID. Telecommuting for her new job was not what she expected, but Briesen Cooper, CPA (BBA '19 & MAcy '20) and everyone else adapted. Now, she regularly utilizes virtual meetings to work with teams and clients across the country. Briesen passed one part of the CPA exam while completing her MAcy degree and the remaining parts right after graduation. She became a CPA in 2022. She specializes in State and Local Taxes (SALT). Briesen urges students to participate in student organizations and events such as Meet the Firms. "You'll make real connections with other students and with employers. That's how I landed my internship with the same Big 4 firm where I've been employed since graduation."
Tax Associate II & Acting Senior Associate
While pursuing his BBA in accounting, Riley Shuffield (BBA '21 & MAcy '22) worked for 18 months in a retail popcorn shop. True story...popcorn. Working in retail provided valuable experience in customer service. His first tax internship was at a Big 4 firm where he worked on state and local taxes. The following year, he held an advanced tax internship and accepted a full-time offer at the same Big 4 firm. Most of his clients are private equity firms, hedge funds, and fund of funds. Riley says earning both his undergraduate and MAcy degrees at Texas State was a wise decision. "There is such a wide range of opportunities that are available to you when you graduate with an accounting degree. Even when the job market has dipped in many other careers, the accounting field remains consistent and reliable."
