Graduate Assistantships

Graduate students may be employed as teaching assistants, instructional assistants, research assistants, or graduate assistants in a non-exempt status* from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). A prospective graduate/doctoral employee must be enrolled as a regular, degree-seeking student in graduate studies at Texas State University. The information below can also be found in UPPS 07.07.06.

In the Accounting department, we only offer Graduate Instructional Assistantships.

PLEASE READ APPLICATION CRITERIA BEFORE APPLYING:

MUST BE ENROLLED IN THE MACY OR MBA PROGRAM IN MCOY COLLEGE OF BUSINESS. NO EXCEPTIONSStudents enrolled in the integrated BBA/MAcy program are not eligible for GA positions until all of the BBA requirements have been met.

A graduate assistant must be taking at least 9 GRADUATE hours to qualify as a salaried GA and are paid once a month. Undergraduates cannot be a GA until all undergraduate courses have been completed.

The department prefers that GAs take no more than 12 hours.

 

Required Skills:

  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Meets deadlines given by faculty and department
  • Can use Outlook calendar or alternative planner to organize time &  workload efficiently
  • Must be fluid/adaptive with day-to-day workloads
  • Punctual
  • Volunteers for tasks when needed
  • Pays attention to detail
  • Keeps a clean work area

Expected Hours and Salary Information:

  • Must work at least 15 hours but no more than 20 hours a week
  • The Department of Accounting offers salaried positions that pay $1,594.02 on the first of the month and hourly positions that pay $22.00/hr (paid bi-monthly).

 

Job Duties:

Can include any course-related task within reason. List of common duties include:

  • grading tests, quizzes, homework, and class projects
  • reviewing course materials with undergraduate students
  • proctoring exams for undergraduate courses
  • record retention for both department and faculty members
  • making copies of exams, quizzes, class handouts, etc.
  • participating in grading sessions for joint departmental exams
  • data entry
  • holding sessions for students to review exams
  • organizing faculty offices and files
  • helping the department with extra tasks as assigned

Please note, you cannot work two on-campus jobs simultaneously, however, working an external job does not disqualify you from becoming a GA. By providing information about your job and work schedule, we will try to accommodate based on your availability.

I will make myself available from the week before classes start until the week of graduation. *
With the exception of my classes and studies, I understand that my personal preferences and commitments are secondary to my duties as a graduate assistant. *
